Right now much of the world is feeling uncertain, nervous, and even afraid about the coronavirus pandemic.

Many of you have reached out to me the last several days with concerns and questions about what you can do to naturally support your immune function and health.

First, let me be 100% clear that there is no supplement, medication, or stockpile of toilet paper and hand sanitizer that will protect you from getting COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Any company that is claiming they have a product is full of you know what.

Now, let’s get to it.

The best defense is a good offense, so how do you take control and help your body fight off any illness?

The way to limit the potential of getting any cold, flu, or virus is to be STRONG – in every aspect of your body.

STRONG in your mindset:

  • Trust that we have brilliant scientists and organizations working on this.
  • Believe in your body’s ability to fight
  • Know that this too shall pass.

STRONG in your nutrition:

  • This is not the time to be stress eating garbage (that is the quickest way to compromise your body
  • Your body needs quality whole food nutrition to battle for you
  • Pound in the fresh, real food
  • Stay hydrated! – and careful with the booze (this challenges your body and must be detoxified, i.e. extra work robbing resources from your body)

STRONG in your habits:

  • SLEEP – This is the #1 thing you can control daily that will work to build your immune system and fight off illness. Get minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep per night
  • Limit unnecessary stressors (or stress-inducing people, pundits, or perpetual news cycles programming panic, doom and gloom)
  • Moderate exercise 30-60 minutes 3-4 days per week
  • Move your body, in fresh air away from crowds of people, daily

STRONG in your capability

  • You will make thousands of choices each day.
  • Make the best ones.
  • Keep your thoughts positive.
  • Control what you can control

What about immune-system-boosting foods?

Focus on the foods that will make your digestive system, or microbiome, healthier. Your gut microbiome is the trillions of healthy bacteria that keep us healthy and regulate much of your immune system health. This is because 70% of your immune system lives within your gut.

You must take care of your gut, and your microbiome, much like tending a garden with a variety of different plant species that all grow stronger when they are all thriving.

A good probiotic can go a long way.

So can many foods.

Broths:

For generations we have known that broths are amazing for delivery of hydration and nutrients, particularly when not feeling our best. Bone broths, or if that isn’t you jam, miso and mushroom veggie broths are fantastic.

Mushrooms:

If you have been in my office, or have read some of my other posts, mushrooms are powerhouses of good stuff for our immune system. Reishi, shiitake, turkey tail, and cordyceps in particular are fantastic.

According to Paul Stamets, a world-renowned mushroom expert, we share about 50% of the same DNA with mushrooms. Wrap your head around that stat! There is a reason they have been a “superfood” in ancient times well before everything was a superfood!

I like to get them in early and often – in my morning smoothie and coffee, and with my mid-day tea.

I love Organo coffee and tea – infused with Reishi and cordyceps.

They also have capsules of Reishi spores. A fantastic way to get more on board.

Supplements:

Again, NO SUPPLEMENT can protect you from coronavirus, but some vitamins, herbs, amino acids and other nutritional substances are known to support healthy immune system function.

Taking some extra vitamin C, zinc, vitamin A, astragalus root, echinacea, and elderberry extracts are all effective supportive immune-boosting nutritional sources, and totally safe – as long as you know you are getting them from a reputable company.

Vitamin C has been used as an antiviral since the 1930s. It has been used in very high injected doses since the 1940s. In the decades since, vitamin C has been used for viral pneumonia.

If you read about what they are doing in China and Korea – EVERY patient and healthcare worker is being loaded up on Vitamin C.

Vitamin D is also great. (If you have any kidney issues, consult your doc first)
